Substance Use Disorders

Twenty percent of the population has a Substance Use Disorder of some type, accounting for millions of dollars in lost productivity and absenteeism.  Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory, and related circuitry.  Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations.  Like other chronic diseases, addiction often involves cycles of relapse and remission. This presentation discusses the risks of drug use and addiction in the workplace, successful treatment modalities, and strategies to control the effects of drugs in the workplace through appropriate Substance Use Disorder Programs.

Presenters: 

Don Teater MD, MPH is a family physician from North Carolina. His work now focuses on the intersection of pain, opioids, and addiction. He was lead facilitator for the expert panel during the development of the CDC Guidelines for treating chronic pain. He continues to work with the CDC and other federal and state organizations on the opioid issue while continuing to see patients in western NC.

Course Outcomes:

Upon completion of this session, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify the components of addiction and Substance Use Disorders
  2. Discuss the risk factors of developing Substance Use Disorders
  3. Describe the components of a successful Substance Use Disorders program.
