Increasingly, tobacco users utilize e-cigarettes as a method to quit tobacco use. Increased rate of tobacco users receiving a brief intervention, reduces the rate of tobacco users utilizing e-cigarettes as a method to quit, and reduces the rate of tobacco and e-cigarette usage. Cessation treatment, including Quitline-delivered cessation treatment, is often not integrated into healthcare systems. Health provider use of referral mechanisms, like Ask, Advise, Refer to Quit, Don’t Switch, is a key strategy for improving the impact of cessation treatment. The United States Public Health Service has published clinical guidelines recommending all health care providers offer smoking-cessation intervention. Adoption of the United States Public Health Service clinical guidelines for best practices for cessation treatment into practice has been slow due to lack of time and provider training.
Upon completion of this session, the learner will be able to:
- Participants will be able to describe the brief intervention process, along with strategies for countering false e-cigarette marketing claims in guiding patients towards quitting tobacco products not switching to e-cigarette devices.
- Participants will be able to establish an evidence-based proven-effective comprehensive tobacco treatment plan with their patient that includes a combination of both counseling plus FDA-approved cessation medication to aid in their quit attempt.
