Course Description:

Individuals make lifestyle choices that cause diseases that require medical interventions, such as medications and surgeries. Increasing OHN knowledge of how lifestyle choices can adversely effect health and safety can result in better choices to reduce risk of disease or need for medical treatment.  OHNs can increase the wellness of their workforces through increased knowledge and employee education of positive lifestyle choices.

Course Outcomes:

Upon completion of this session, the learner will be able to:

  1. Discuss diseases that can be modified by changes in lifestyle.
  2. Describe ways in which lifestyle choices affect the individuals' health and safety status.
  3. List types of medications that can be avoided by healthy lifestyles.
  4. Identify how individuals can modify their lifestyles to avoid the need for medications and lead to wellness in their lives.

The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc. (AAOHN) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Presenter Information: 

Dr. Gentry Dodd, MD : Dr. Dodd is currently senior physician in Employee Health Services at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis. He received his medical training at Indiana University School of Medicine with subsequent training and board certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. In 2017, Dr. Dodd was among the initial cohort of physicians to be board certified through the newly formed American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. He is passionate about the field of Lifestyle Medicine and its ability to prevent, treat, and reverse the vast majority of chronic disease affecting our population.
