The opioid epidemic is a big problem that has consequences for all Americans. The epidemic continues to grow and health care providers are at the forefront of the issues. This presentation will focus on pain and its treatment with special emphasis on opioids; it will further delve into the growing opioid epidemic and its implications on practice and society.
Upon completion of this session, the learner will be able to:
- Identify types and mechanisms of actions of pain medications and adjuvants.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the use of pain scales and the WHO pain ladder.
- Review data and issues surrounding the opioid epidemic.

Alana Whittaker, PharmD, BCPS, is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Roseman University of Health Sciences and received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Howard University, Washington, DC. She completed her Pharmacy Practice Residency at Sentara Healthcare in Norfolk, VA and her Internal Medicine Specialty Residency at Seton Family of Hospitals/University of Texas at Austin in Austin, TX. She has a practice site at Valley Hospital in Las Vegas, NV where she rounds with an Internal Medicine team. She is actively involved in her community serving at health fairs, screening patients for hypertension, diabetes and lipid abnormalities and also vaccinating patients. She currently serves as the Director-at-Large for Education for the Nevada Society of Health-System Pharmacists (NVSHP). She is from Barbados and enjoys traveling, cooking watching and reading in her spare time..
