While the basic forms of reasonable accommodations provide a starting point from which employers can build, the complexity of hiring best practices, stay-at-work, and return-to-work situations has grown. Following a brief review the common types of accommodations JAN will focus on how negotiating reasonable accommodations may be necessary in order to find a solution that works for both the employer and the employee. Topics to be discussed include: Managing situations where an applicant needs an accommodation; recognizing when employees need an accommodation in order to stay at work; best practices for determining what accommodation will work best; and situations where employees may be returning to work from an extended leave of absence. Real-life examples of accommodations will be presented to illustrate the types of situations JAN consultants have assisted with, including accommodations for individuals with cognitive/psychological impairments, motor impairments, and sensory impairments. Finally, practical strategies for successful negotiation and implementation of reasonable accommodations will be discussed.
Presenter Information: As a Senior Consultant at the Job Accommodation Network (JAN), Elisabeth Simpson, M.S., CRC fields questions from employees and employers regarding their rights and responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and assists in identifying accommodation solutions for employees with both motor and sensory impairments. Elisabeth holds a Bachelor's degree in Biology and a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. As a nationally certified rehabilitation counselor (CRC), Elisabeth has worked in the private sector as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, assisting employees and employers with accommodations and career development.
