Register for CSTE's "Exploring Occupational Health and Safety Issues in the Marijuana Industry Webinar" on Monday, May 15

Dear Colleagues,
Please register for the following webinar and feel free to share the announcement.
On Monday, May 15th at 2:00 pm EST, CSTE's Occupational Health Subcommittee and Marijuana Subcommittee will host a one-hour webinar entitled: “Exploring Occupational Health and Safety Issues in the Marijuana Industry.” Register for the webinar by clicking the hyperlink here.
When recreational marijuana becomes legalized in various states, it creates an industry with new and recognized hazards and challenging surveillance methods. This webinar will highlight a state example where diverse stakeholders were convened to create a comprehensive guideline on worker health and safety in Colorado. National agencies have also responded to state requests to evaluate potential hazards in the marijuana industry.

On May 15, our featured presenters include Roberta Smith, RN MSPH CIC CIH, Occupational Health Program Manager from Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment; Meredith Towle, MPH, State Occupational Epidemiologist from Wyoming Department of Workforce Services; James Couch, PhD CIH CSP REHS/RS, Industrial Hygienist from CDC/National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH); and Bernadette Albanese, MD MPH, Medical Epidemiologist from Tri-County Health Department in Colorado.
During the webinar, partners from Colorado will discuss the objective behind the comprehensive guideline's creation as well as the collaborative process to bring the necessary stakeholders together. The next portion of the webinar will describe how the NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation program has responded to recent requests to evaluate potential occupational hazards associated with harvesting and processing cannabis at two worksites in states with legalized cannabis production and use. The last portion will provide a brief overview of marijuana-related population surveillance and the challenges with conducting surveillance on adverse health effects among marijuana industry workers.
The learning objectives of the webinar are to:

  • Understand who safety and health stakeholders might be in addressing hazards of an emerging industry.
  • Learn about current research efforts at NIOSH to evaluate potential occupational hazards in the legalized cannabis industry.
  • Gain an improved understanding of how legalized marijuana impacts occupational health and safety surveillance.

The webinar recording and slides will be available on the CSTE Webinar Library shortly after the session has concluded. A follow-up announcement will be shared once materials are available.
